The third peak in the Karakorum (8,047 meters) was included in the Nanga Parbat expedition, but bad weather put an end to the adventure, which was postponed almost two years.

These were hard years for Edurne, who fell into depression and was on the verge of giving up alpine climbing. After a year and a half, Edurne came back in 2007 to pick up where she had left off.

On 12 July she crowned her ninth 'eight-thousander' after 20 hours of assent with the team of the Al filo de lo imposible television programme, which joined the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Broad Peak made by numerous expeditions.
Broad Peak (initially called K3) is the twelfth highest mountain on Earth and the fourth highest in Pakistan. It is in the Karakorum, on the frontier between China and Pakistan, and around 8 km from K2.

Broad Peak was baptised as K3 (which means the third peak of the Karakorum) by T.G. Montgomery in 1856.

This peak is known locally as Faichan Kangri. The literal translation of Broad Peak as Phalchan Kangri is not accepted amongst the Balti.

1954 – First attempt made by Karl Herrligkoffer. A severe storm with extreme cold prevented him from succeeding.

1957 - The first ascent was made on 9 June by an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck and formed by Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhl.

1975 – The first ascent of the central peak was made by a Polish expedition led by J. Ferenski on 28 July.

1977 – The second ascent was not achieved until 8 August by a Japanese expedition formed by 13 people, of which three reached the summit.

1998 – Disappearance of the alpinist Eric Escoffier on 24 July.
